What's with this "first 100 days" obsession?
Does anyone else find this obsession with "first 100 days" in office silly? These buggers have ruined the country for more than 60 years. Another 100 days is not going to make a whole lot of difference, anyway you cut it. Of course, the first signs indicate that they are going to inflict even more damage than we previously thought possible. But we remain hopeful.

The mindless aping of every superficial and symbolic gesture of the current American administration points to the deep cultural and intellectual void created in the Indian society. Socialism is partly to blame, as that ideology basically kills creative and intellectual spirit little by little. Cultural invasion, aided by the secular Government also shares some of the blame.

As it is this reduces a serious business like Governance into a popularity contest or a limited overs cricket match. This "100 days" concept sounds even more silly when you consider the fact that there was no regime change in India. At least in America there was a change of guard.

The media is playing along. We know how this will end, celebrations and mutual back pattings galore, perhaps a mini award ceremony. To us, it just looks more comical than 60s plump Bollywood heroines wearing obsolete designer clothes from the West, in two sizes too small.

 Fit to print?
Conversion bid by armed men resented

SILCHAR, June 22 – Bhuvan Pahar, one of the most holy places in south Assam, particularly in Barak Valley, 38 km from Silchar town, has come under the threat of miscreants. Gun-totting members of a newly formed militant group, named Manmasi National Christian Army, comprising 15 rebels, has been forcing the residents of Bhuban Pahar under the threat of gun to convert to Christianity.

This information was forwarded to Sonai Police which along with the 5th Assam Rifles conducted a search operation which led to the arrest of 13 miscreants, including their commander-in-chief. Two SBBL guns and a country-made pistol along with sufficient quantity of ammunition were seized from their possession. All the miscreants were handed over to Sonai Police for further investigation.

This group of miscreants, dressed in black with a red cross on their back, along with arms, enter from Tipaimukh through Barak river by boat and mount Bhuvan Pahar. They threatened and asked the Hindu people of Tezpur village, including the priest of this famous Hindu temple, to convert into Christianity.

The problem there began when some Hmar miscreants stated themselves to be members of Manmasi National Christian Army and had started putting pressure on the Hindu residents of Bhuvan Pahar to become Christians. The local residents also said that Manmasi National Christian Army cadres had painted cross symbol on the walls of the temples with their blood. [link]
Of course, as we all know, forced conversions to not happen.

 Headscarves and Headlines
(click on image for a larger version)

These are the headlines from the largest circulation newspaper of a 'secular' nation.

Fortunately the French President's remarks have not yet triggered violence like some other incidents in the past did. But one can't be too sure.

It is a pretty funny situation, anyway you look at it. A wise blogger once wrote, French Sikhs are French etc. How about French Muslims? Most of them are Algerians, with no ethnic connection with Indian Muslims. Meanwhile the prominent Muslim women politicians in France are not only not very adherent of any religious codes, one of them, Rachida Dati, recently became a single mother. Try making her wear headscarves. Actually, most French Muslim women (at least the ones brought up in France) would secretly admire President Sarkozy's daring statements. Why? Well, just google "tournante".

The Times of India is essentially stoking violence. For days on end now, the paper has been bloviating about the French president's comments. Today's headline takes the cake. If head coverings are really so beneficial for women, why don't they petition the Rajmata or Yuvraj to make it mandatory? Alternately, suppose a VHP leader had talked about virtues of modest clothing, would we see similar articles?

In none of the articles does the TOI state facts necessary to put the matter in perspective. For instance, the fact that even Turkey bans headscarves in public places was not mentioned. How many Muslims in India really know this fact? But then again, the purpose of this coverage is not about keeping the public truly informed. The purpose of this coverage is to make sure secularism wins elections. Perhaps in a few days the Indian Government will make an official protest.

There is truth and then there is secularism
When we read about the Ram Pradhan Committee report a few days earlier, we almost saw this coming:
MUMBAI: The Ashok Chavan government's sudden U-turn on its promise to table the Ram Pradhan Committee report on the 26/11 terror attack created a huge ruckus in both the Houses of the legislature. The Opposition accused the government of trying to shield three of its ministers, who are believed to have been named in the report for dereliction of their duty.

Terming the contents of the report to be "sensitive" , home minister Jayant Patil, however, placed an action-to-be-taken report (ATR) even as the Opposition BJP-Shiv Sena demanded that the panel report be tabled. The last session of the current legislature came to an end with the Congress-NCP and BJP-Shiv Sena combines swearing at each other and promising a showdown in the assembly elections four months later. [link]
This is a bureaucratic report about response to the 26/11. Jayant Patil's backpedalling is laughable. People deserve to see this report.

But then again, we all know what the mandate of a secular Government is. If we haven't learned this lesson in six decades, perhaps we are never going to learn.

 The sensitive kind
FIR against Shah Rukh for comments against Islam

MUMBAI: A complaint was on Thursday lodged against Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan for allegedly making statements against Islam in a magazine.

"Complainant Khalid Babu Querishi alleged that in the July issue of the Time and Style magazine, Shah Rukh had used unparliamentary language against the Prophet which is unacceptable," George said.

The case was registered under section 295-a (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religion feelings or any class by insulting its religion beliefs) and 34 (acts done by several persons with common interest) of IPC. [link]
Nothing new here, their Government is at the center. Move on.

Did affirmative action result in 26/11 Police failures?
Gafoor failed to lead Mumbai cops during 26/11: Panel

MUMBAI: A two-member committee that investigated the police response to the 26/11 terror attacks has singled out then Mumbai police commissioner Hasan Gafoor for his complete failure to provide leadership in the hour of crisis.

Gafoor was replaced on Saturday by D Sivanandan, chief of the state intelligence department. TOI had earlier carried reports on how the committee headed by veteran bureaucrat Ram Pradhan had given the Mumbai police a clean chit, saying their actions during 26/11 had to be viewed in the context of the "war-like situation".

The committee, however, said Gafoor completely failed to implement the standard operation procedures laid down in the Bombay Police Manual in letter and spirit. Through much of the attack, Gafoor stationed himself at one spot near the Oberoi and asked crime branch chief Rakesh Maria to take charge of the control room. Gafoor did not show qualities of leadership, the panel said. Above all, Gafoor's attitude created an impression among subordinates that they were not part of the high-level police team tackling terror. [link]
Incidentally, the secular Government has ordered businesses to hire more minorities.

All three Surat Gang Rape suspects Muslims
First, the Times of India spin:
Gangrape incident a blow to Surat's safe-city image

SURAT: Sexual abuse of a 17-year-old school-going girl by three miscreants in a four-wheeler while plying through the main thoroughfares of city on Friday morning has shocked Surtis. For, the city is considered safest for the fairer sex.

The manner in which the heinous crime was committed by perpetrators was disturbing enough for Piplod resident Rakesh Kumar, a father of two young children. "The city is known for being safe and secure for women. But, this incident near Majura Gate indicates the deteriorating overall situation," Kumar said.

Never before in the recent history of this city a girl has been picked up like this and sexually abused, said Geeta Shroff of Apmrutyu Nivaran Sahaya (ANIS), a social organisation working for the welfare of women. [link]
Well, it turns out that all three perps are from the minority community:
The three took turns to rape the girl on the back seat while the other two kept the teenaged boy pinned down on the front seat. After an hour-long ordeal, they were dropped at the same crossroads at 6.45 am.

About eight hours later, the accused — Shahid Saiyad, Tariq Qutubuddin Saiyad and Abu Bakr Shaikh — were nabbed from their residences in Habibsha Maholla in Kadarsha Ni Naal.

Shahid’s father NG Saiyad is a police inspector in Dholka while Tariq’s father Qutubuddin Saiyad is a head constable in Mahidharpura police station in Surat.

While Bakr runs a mobile phone business, the other two are vagabonds. There are fears the incident may take communal overtones. [link]
Interesting conclusion by the Times of India, despite the admittedly safe record of Surat. Meanwhile such pithy editorial comments have not been made for Bombay, where recently a multi-culti crowd (different religions, regions, caste etc.) abused an American student. In general, incidents of sexual assault are on the rise in Bombay.

There is a desperate need for honest assessment of this situation, given that two of the perps were sons of Police personnel. We are willing to bet extremely provocative and tasteless movies such as Firaaq is triggering this sort of incidents. Reportedly in a scene in that movie, the brother of a Hindu rioter asks him whether he had enjoyed raping a Muslim woman during the riots. It is not just tasteless but totally scandalous how this scene passed the censor board.

Also compare and contrast with the recent incident in Kashmir. They have already concluded that the perps were CRPF personnel. Meanwhile, the incident in Surat is a law and order problem.

 Funny money
Japan Investigates Report Two Seized With $134 Billion of Bonds

June 12 (Bloomberg) -- Japan is investigating media reports two of its citizens were detained in Italy after allegedly attempting to take $134 billion worth of U.S. bonds out of the country.

"Italian authorities are in the midst of the investigation, and haven't yet confirmed the details, including whether they are Japanese citizens or not," Takeshi Akamatsu, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said by telephone today in Tokyo. "Our consulate in Milan is continuing efforts to confirm the reports." [link]
We fervently hope this is a hoax, although given that the source is Bloomberg, chances are rather slim. That is some serious amount of funny money, close to 10 times the size of the farmer loan waiver.

As expected, no further updates available about the black money issue. The CBI is doing a crackdown on Government officials. Interesting times, these.

 The Rabbit
Question 1: The Rabbit from the Sporting Event
The rabbit is the sprinting champion of the small animal sporting games, but he cannot swim. Once, the rabbit was chased by the wolf to the riverside, and nearly caught. For the sake of developing the animals, the management enrolled the rabbit in swim training. He was in the same class as the cat, the tortoise, the squirrel, etc. The cat and the tortoise learned to swim, and having acquired another skill, were very happy, but the rabbit and the squirrel still couldn’t swim even after spending a long time studying, and were very worried. Class instructor Duck said: "We, with our two legs, can swim, and you, with four legs, still can't? 90% of success comes from effort! Come on! Quack quack!"

Critic frog sighed: "What rabbit is good at is running! Why are you only training the weaknesses and not developing the strengths? Thinker Crane said, "Life requires more than just one skill! If the rabbit can’t learn swimming he should learn burrowing, if the squirrel can't learn swimming he should study tree climbing."
Choose the correct perspective, firmly establish your point, choose your own style and heading, don't write anything outside the scope of the provided material, don’t interplant or plagiarize.
A question from the Chinese gaokao (national college entrance exam). From here.

Details here. Of course the fallout for developing economies will be devastating. It is not clear what the UPA Government is going to do in their second innings. The relevant ministries have been assigned to strange choices.

 History repeats itself
Hindus in Pakistan agree to pay jazia to Taliban

Islamabad: In May, dozens of Sikhs living in the Orakzai agency were forced to move out after the Taliban demanded Rs50 million as jazia, or security tax, from them. Locals said the families were impoverished and left the area to avoid any Taliban action.

Less than a month later, the tax net has spread wider, to the Khyber agency tribal area. The Sikhs, Hindus, and Christians there have been told by the Taliban-backed Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI) to pay jazia in exchange for ensuring their security in the area.

Sources said several jirgas (meetings of elders) were held to settle the issue. One such meeting held last week, attended by the leaders and elders of the Sikh, Hindu, and Christian communities at Tirah Valley, resulted in the decision to pay up rather than move out. [link]
Obviously this issue did not get the attention it deserves, The Times of India seems to have given the item a miss. The intellectuals, who never seem to miss a literary or historical parallel or pun for "Hindu fascist" related news have not commented on it either.

Meanwhile, closer to home:
Haj gets dearer

HYDERABAD: Pilgrims availing government subsidy for Haj-2009 will have to cough up at least Rs 25,000 more. Reason: Steep rise in rent and foreign exchange.

Till last year, pilgrims who opted for 'Green' category (accommodation less than one km from Haram Shareef) had to pay Rs 73,592, 'White' (within 1.5 km) Rs 64,276 and 'Azizia' (3-5 km) Rs 63,112. However, from now onwards, the revised fee for `Green' category is Rs 1.25 lakh, `White' Rs 1.18 lakh and 'Azizia,' Rs 1.08 lakh.

Barring these three categories, a special category 'Green Deluxe' has been added from this year onwards. As per a letter received by the State Haj Committee office from Central Haj Committee (CHC), each pilgrim preferring the Green Deluxe category would have to pay Rs 1.40 lakh towards foreign exchange and airfare. [link]
This is of course an indirect Jaziya tax. The interesting part is the addition of the new category "Green Deluxe". It only costs 15K more than the next lower category - maybe this one has a greater net subsidy built into it, who knows?

They are not the only ones, Chindu reports that soon after the election result annoucement, AP Chief Minister YSR left on a pilgrimage to Israel. It is not clear whether the expenses will be borne by the state, i.e. you. As we understand, there is a Haj like subsidy available for the other minorities for pilgrimage to Bethlehem. We urge them to make use of it ASAP, before The One gifts Jerusalem to the Arabs. Then any pilgrimage to the area might get a wee bit difficult.

 Total4U: A low yield scam
A key accused in the sensational 'Total4U' financial fraud case has alleged that a police official investigating the case pressurized her to keep mum on the alleged links of the sons of two ministers in the LDF cabinet with the promoter of financial firm, Sabarinath.

Two audio CDs, purportedly of the recording of the questioning of the 10th accused in the case, Dr Ramani, by a Crime Branch Dy SP probing the case, was submitted to the court by her lawyer. [link]
Swindling people out of their money, ministers' kids involved? What else is new, this is called socialism.
