Industrialization in West Bengal: Nandigram and beyond

Have you heard of Mahabharat Motors? How about the Xenitis Group of companies? Amar brand of PCs and peripherals? Arjun brand motorcycles, Xpression range of bikes? Well, these are the new age industrial entities coming up in West Bengal, based on the SEZ model. Among these, only the Amar PCs and peripherals are in production, with a revenue of several hundred crores. The rest are in planning phase.

Mahabharat motors has a Chinese partner, Zongshen, while Xenitis will tie up with Guangzhou Motors to produce the Xpression range of motorbikes. An interesting diversification for a PC manufacturer in the latter case.

But the common thread in all these cases (apart from the Communist Government of West Bengal, of course), is the Indonesian conglomerate - Salim Group. Salim group seems to have an insatiable appetite for land.

Surely there is nothing wrong with this, maybe we are just too paranoid. But just the above scenario gives us very uneasy feelings. This feeling is compounded by the astonishing claims by secular intellectuals in the aftermath of the Nandigram fiasco.

So, let's put this into perspective, as comrade Brinda Karat would say.

A shady Muslim company from an Islamic theocratic nation
+
Mostly Muslim victims of land grab
+
Communist cadres of unknown religion
= Soft Hindutva.

Meanwhile, comrade Mrs. Karat spun a very interesting theory in her Devil's advocate interview. According to her, before the cadres recaptured Nandigram, about 3,500 people (mostly Muslims and Dalits) had been driven out by the Maoists. Apparently these are still living in camps. Where did these people come from? Before January this year, Nandigram was a nice quaint little village, no reports of any faction planning to evict any other group. As soon as the SEZ was announced, there were huge protests. Then the first round of violence happened in March. Buddha backtracked and said there would not be an SEZ any more. November saw the second flare up.

Something does not add up here. It is quite likely that the commies have propped up illegal immigrants from Bangladesh in order to add a moral spin to their tale.

I am wondering if Tata has some secret Chinese partner in the Rs 1 Lakh car project... After all, the Chinese are expert at making stuff cheaper.

Good one BarbarIndian, I missed the muslim+chinese connection. Most of the industries interested in West Bengal seem to be either muslim or chinese ...

BI,

IIRC, Xenitis is the company which is coming up with a damn cheap motorcycle, somewhat like the Rs 1 lakh Tata car.

Also, Xenitis would not be the first to sell chinese bikes in India. Some company called monto motors tried that first in India. As per market reports, the damn cheap chinese bikes they assembled here or imported turned to scrap after 6 months of use. Needless to say, it was a failure, and the fears of bigger bikemakers of India like Bajaj, TVS and Hero were laid to rest...

I dont think xenitis can come up with any bike more than Rs 10,000 cheaper than the current bikes at same quality and specifications. If they do, dont buy the bike.

I seriously am wondering what Tata is up to. I hope he knows what he is doing.... Kinetic Engineering came up with a similar car earlier which bombed miserably.

Logical, simplly intelligent Revelation about that backdrop of so-called treacherous and foul-smelling International groups with vested interest in Mother India.

All these brands appear like local brands with after-sales support and warranty that would last a day. The day gets over, while fixing that damn thing and the next day warranty jumps over the tail, and thus begin one's travails.

Arjun brand motorcycles, Xpression range of bikes? the names sound so ludicrous.just imagine, a proud owner declaring that he rides Arjun,as if it's the modern chariot with wheels, nuts and bolts which are not loyal to their subscribed places, and leave their trail on toughie Indian roads.
This reflects how foolish both the state Govt and officials are, and how unintelligent enough to get trapped by rather spurious-sounding firms..have they attempted to understand what WB's DNA is, what kind of industries find the variables of WB state to be more appropriate for their products/services?
If someone wants to set up a manufacturing plant for two-wheelers in Pune, I can understand, as Pune has strong historical baggage in that industry? Does WB have any established footprints in this industry? I am not aware of any such threads.
PC manufacturer getting into motorbikes, what a ridiculous brand extension?can you imagine Infosys bikes?lol

Sounds like The NEVER ENDING Comedy of Errors.Unfortunately, the poor man has to suffer again due to such pro-rich strategic moves by foolish Government

"Re-captured" leaps out of the page. It was then, invariably captured. Who did capture? Can you really capture a part of a sovereign country? Is it not sedition? Get your phrases right. One Immense wrong was righted, of coarse by force. Mamta is a destructive force. A mad woman with lots of greed and megalomania.
