These newspapers are pretending that climategate never happened. Well, climategate already gets more google hits than Global Warming.
As it stands now, the global warming story stands thoroughly debunked. Up until now, most people accepted the general idea of global warming, although few believed in the doomsday scenarios and even fewer accepted the so called solutions.
Climategate shows the whole thing was a scam on a scale beyond our wildest imagination. It corrupted institutions, sacred principles of science and above all, it pushed a set of people generally considered above suspicion on the brink of and possibly well into criminal behavior. Perhaps the latter is the most tragic chapter in the book of climategate.
Consider the following:
- the scandal involves the very core of the global warming industry, the Climate Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, UK. The entire edifice of global warming and the IPCC reports are based on this organization's data and research.
- over the last two decades, the research grants for CRU and other pro scientists have increased dramatically, to the tune of many tens of millions, if not hundreds.
- the global warming scientists have always claimed a massive scientific consensus. It turns out there was no such consensus. The 2,500 scientists named in the IPCC report? Well, perhaps a few of them are actually scientists, the rest are bureaucrats. Rajedra Pachauri, IPCC head honcho, is a former railway engineer.
- the scientists vigorously denied any grain of truth in the so called "skeptics" claim, yet they actually entertained Stephen McIntyre's rebuttal and corrected the part involving Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age.
- the scientists persistently refused to share data with the "skeptics". If they at all released data, it was the heavily massaged and processed data.
- CRU now claims that the raw data was deleted for "space reasons".
- The Chief of CRU has stepped down following an externally constituted investigation.
- The famous hockey stick graph was found to have been based on a single tree! This tree was actually a huge outlier.
- NASA is yet to share raw data
- New Zealand NIWA produced a graph showing global warming that can not rationally be reproduced from the underlying data
The list goes on and go on. If what they are willing to admit and what their massaged data and research reveals is shocking enough, what they did to achieve the so called consensus is absolutely repulsive. They ganged up on anyone in the academia who challenged their thesis, they influenced journals to pull out contrarian articles and universities to drop competing research. Some of the emails exposed in the scandal indicate they might have completely compromised the scientific peer review process. They took care of the academia while their overground supporters - politicians, governments and government agencies made sure that if you did not support global warming, your funds ran dry.
In due course, everyone wised up and played ball. To understand the implication of this, consider this: reliable temperature records exist only for a century or so. In order to get a handle on temperature variability, one needs data for at least a couple of thousands of years. This is achieved in a rather esoteric field of paleoclimatology. This science produces what is known as proxy data - for instance, by studying width of tree rings of ancient trees, one can get a handle of temperatures far into the past. In this manner the "global warming" science touches upon a very broad range of sciences.
It is entirely possible that in order to keep contradictory evidence out of sunlight, many of these science areas have been either been heavily compromised or parched in terms of funding.
As is very evident, the entire process of Government funding research creates such sinister scenarios of moral hazard. Economics as we all know is a heavily compromised area, with the climategate expose, it appears that any political meddling in supposedly cut and dry areas of sciences can get corrupted in no time.
The only way to restore sanity is to let the market work its magic on the scientific process. Once the dignity of the science is restored, there is little by way of climatic danger that humanity can't handle.

I'm not really sure why you guys are hell bent on disproving the climate science. Is this a copycat of the conservatives in the US? Or is it just because you oppose anything that has support from the liberals. There have been many discussions and explanations for the climategate emails. Here is one. http://enviroknow.com/2009/11/25/climategate-the-swifthack-scandal-what-you-need-to-know/
sundaraz,
Did you at all read any of the leaked emails and code?
Of course, I did. Did you read the link I posted or swifthack.com. It's not a black/white information that explains everything. It's not like "oh we got this scandal, that explains everything, let's pack the bags for climate scientists" sort of a revelation. I don't see a conspiracy here. In fact, I see a campaign to malign and misinform about climate science, just when the summit is in progress. Climate science is not about some liberal elites ' sensibilities about this world. Anyway, I didn't comment to argue about climate science here. My larger question was, why are you guys interested in this topic this much? I haven't seen any other world issues discussed here in detail. Is it because it pisses the liberals? Or is it what the conservatives code of conduct book, asks you to do?
We discuss issues that concern us and this issue perhaps concerns us most of all. We don't want liberal cogs coming in here and telling us what to do with our industries, energy requirements and lifestyle. We don't want to be pushed around by the world government hacks.
If India is left alone the western liberals can do whatever the heck they do in their own countries.
>> They ganged up on anyone in the academia who challenged their thesis, they influenced journals to pull out contrarian articles and universities to drop competing research...indicate they might have completely compromised the scientific peer review process....took care of the academia while their overground supporters .. made sure that if you did not support ... your funds ran dry. <<
Sounds like field of Indology !!
> there is little by way of climatic danger that humanity can't handle
ABSOLUTELY AGREE
"As it stands now, the global warming story stands thoroughly debunked"
By making such statements, you loose all credibility.
It is true that ONE study has been discredited. Some scientists have had their reputations tarnished, probably even their careers irreparably damaged. But that it is it.
The overwhelming body of evidence, conducted by many hundreds of scientists over many decades is still in favour of climate change.
Rishi:
The IPCC report is based primarily on CRU research and includes weather station data which is heavily massaged, tree ring data by Keith Briffa - again very suspect and massaged to eliminate MWP and LIA. The scandal hits the nerve center of the whole global warming thesis. Add to it that CRU deleted their raw data set for "space reasons". NASA is yet to release unmassaged data. Only CRU has done the type of extensive research and data collection that can prove or disprove AGW. There may be thousands of studies that involve paleoclimatology, temperatures or related fields but one can not say they support AGW.
It is a general claim that all major scientists support AGW, not true. At least 30% top scientists strongly dispute AGW, AMA scientists are doing a signature campaign to change the organizational position.
The impression that all scientists concur and a few peripheral nuts do not agree is created by politicians and media.
Funny that one statement from me can make me loose all credibility, but the AGW proponents remain chaste.
"Funny that one statement from me can make me loose all credibility...."
As I said, scientists conducting the studies have had their reputations tarnished and probably their careers damaged. So, you can see that I am fair on assigning blame.
The CO2 content in the atmosphere is at it highest level in 250 years. Over the last 800,000 years ice core records have shown that an increase in CO2 correlates to in increase in temperature.
The increase in CO2 has been shown to be due to human activity. This is by carbon dating. It shows that the carbon in the CO2 is from fossil fuels.
Global warming is based on not one, but a number of studies. Discrediting one will not affect it much.
Rishi:
Correct, that's what the IPCC scientists say whose reputation underwent a thorough shredding in the email/data leak. All these ideas have been debunked by equally qualified scientists in peer reviewed journals - only their studies have not been cherry picked and put together in a report supported by the UN and politicians.
By the way, Al Gore caught lying again, he claims the emails leaked were 10 years old although many were as recent as this November!
Al Gore lied
The media conduct in this matter has been absolutely shameful.i call them environmentalists' bitches.More here-

I think it would be redundant pointing out the latest gaffe in the IPCC report on glaciers melting in India by 2035 (I think you'd blogged on that as well). I am pleasantly surprised that there are fellow Indians who refuse to swallow the media hype around AGW whole. I make the distinction here to point out... AGW as a theory deserves careful consideration, but I find offensive the "shock and awe" strategy being used to try to ram it down our throats. Where's the proven science? If you believe that climate change skeptics are just being contrary (as how rishi and sundaraz seem to be indicating above), you should take a look at Climate Audit, which is almost BORING in its adherence to straight no-frills, no-hype analysis and utter contempt for emotionalism (I've seen skeptic commentors who had their posts snipped because they criticised the hype around global warming rather than the actual faults in the data).
I must say barbarindian, while I do feel a little unease as to your opinions on minorities (for the record, I do not think that they're as bad as you suggest, there are bad apples in every sub group within our country, and we must try our best to accomodate everyone), but I do believe you've hit the nail on the head on this issue. Long live unemotional and unbiased science!
