It's pouring life sentences

Kanpur Riots, Coimbatore blasts, poetess murder, mistaken encounter killing ...

A lot of those sentenced deserved the noose but the political will is lacking. Our sentencing guideline requires a complete makeover. Between 14 years and meet your maker, there is a wide gulf waiting to be filled. The judges are taking the "rarest of rare" thingy a bit too literally.

Among all the news reports, which range from politically tinged to attempt at morbid humor, this one stood out:
Advocate by profession and a local Congress boss Pushpendra Singh Yadav, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by the additional district court here in the post-Babri Masjid riot case, was seen waving and smiling at his fellow advocates. However, no sooner the verdict was announced, he was rushed to the district hospital on medical grounds.

A former Kanpur-dehat district bar association president, Pushpendra was accused of being part of the crowd which incited mobs into setting several Muslim houses in Govindnagar here on fire on December 10, 1992. Eleven people were charred to death in the arson. [link]
