Earlier I wrote a post about the immediate impact of the proposed reservations. But this thing is unraveling much faster that I thought.
For those who were wondering about the apparent silence of the PM, well, it looks like he capitulated. Actually he went one step further and called for voluntary affirmative action on the part of the industry addressing the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
So far the CII was vociferously opposing the move. Industry leaders including Narayana Murthy had strongly criticized the move. Now this comment from none other than the PM has them scrambling for the exit door. They are planning to set up a task force.
Will this move help the CII avoid another legislative blow? Not likely. Dalit and OBC MPs are already lobbying for a law to mandate private companies to implement a reservation system (as if 15(5) is not enough!).
If the CII is under any illusion that it can get off easy by providing say 20-30% employment in non-key positions, well, they got another thing coming. Read more here and here.

Good post barbar,
It is heartening to see like-minded people get together for a cause. Those links were excellent but those ambedkar.org was the epitome of shamelessness among SC/STs. Do they ever stop? Don't they have any pride in their being as human and stop asking favours? That guy is constantly complaining that he didn't get any reservation / compensation for his being an SC/ST. Is that our, the rest of the people, fault that he born into an SC/ST family? He laments that upper caste people tried to stop the proceedure of reservation without any facts to back up.
His complaint of promotions being offered only upto grade II is the most ludicrous one. Ok. So let him reserve the CEO post and MD of each and every government organization. Damn it man, now there will be a day when meritorious poeple will have to ask for reservations.
It is coming down to political appeasement and dirty vote bank politics. I was thinking our dear PM was little descent and above all these gimmicks. But he has proven it that no one is above that dirty line and will have to stoop further low if one has to make a career in politics.
thanks for visiting my blog.
