Eight OBCs held guilty for the Khairlanji massacre

On September 29, 2006, a large mob of OBCs attacked and brutally killed four members of a Dalit family at Khairlanji in Nagpur, among them Priyanka Bhotmange, 17, pictured above. The nation was shocked at the gruesome killing.

Well, justice has finally prevailed, or should we say some semblance of justice, because out of the mob of about 50, only eight have been convicted.

We sincerely hope that the court considers this a "rarest of rare" case. The irony is, this sort of incidents are not really rare.

It may be noted that the same year, the nation was engulfed by a tumultuous debate over the issue of awarding reservation in centrally funded institutes to OBCs (in addition to the up to 69% reservation benefits they enjoy in all Government jobs and all but a few central institutes and minority colleges). Sadly, Priyanka (named after Priyanka Gandhi, a scion of India's ruling dynasty, which had tabled and since then passed the controversial bill) never got to go to college.
