Six OBCs sentenced to death in the Khairlanji case

BHANDARA: A fast track court in Bhandara pronounced death for six of the eight people convicted of killing four members of a family two years ago in Khairlanji, counted among the worst atrocities against Dalits. The remaining two were given life imprisonment.

THE ACCUSED

All residents of Khairlanji village were arrested on October 1, 2006, except Shishupal Dhande who was arrested on October 12, 2006. They were tried under Sections 120 B read with 147, 148, 302, 354, 449, 201 Indian Penal Code read with 149 IPC, and Section 3(1) (xi) and 3(2) (V) of Scheduled castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities ) Act 1989 . It may be noted that the powers that be are contemplating a constitutional amendment aimed at creating reserved constituencies for OBCs. Such constituencies exist today for SC/ST.
