CNN-IBN ran a special program on the upcoming presidential election. Note that Madam hasn't made any press appearence since her gaffe. Looks like Congress has paid heed to my advice. Good call.
There are videos available on their website. Please ignore the transcript, watch the videos instead. The transcripts are heavily edited and glossed over, making a mockery of all journalistic standards.
It was fun to listen to Abhishek Singhvi. He was quite upset that the opposition was trying to malign the ruling party by running a vicious smear campaign. I thought that was what opposition parties are supposed to do. I guess not. Perhaps they are supposed to sit in the parliament, sip Darjeeling chai and clap. Anyway.
Singhvi Sahab went on record by stating quite a few fundamental principles that he believes in. Most notably, as long as it is legal (or rather it is subjudice), it is moral. Also, criminal proceedings against close family members should not matter. Knowledge of gross irregularities in your own sugar mill does not necessarily implicate you, as long as you resign before charges are brought in.
One may wonder why Congress is taking such a phenomenal risk to its reputation for this ceremonial post. They could easily select any number of senior Congress leaders. For that matter they could simply select Kalam. It would be a grand gesture, go down very well with the masses.
As a matter of fact this presidential election is of vital importance to their game plan. Under extenuating circumstances, the president acquires immense power. Keeping in mind some of the recent events, it looks like they just can not afford to have a President they can't play like a remote controlled robot.
People in Rajasthan and Punjab, here comes president's rule. Here are two mugs (mug 1, mug 2) you will see a lot more of in the days to come.
