The reality is we do have this plane in our arsenal, the myth is we have too few (only 100) and that we do not have enough pilots to fly them (remember we had to wait 20 years to get a jet trainer).
@ ... we do not have enough pilots to fly them yea sure, we have the majority of men *drooling over the sexy things in the skies, but keeping their toes and nails busy with materialistic pursuits (read money, great fetching careers and women, misters). this majority just talk and prattle & chicken out when the real act knocks at the door

Guys .. you need the majority of prattle and chicken out kinds to pursue materialistic goals to earn more and then pay more taxes. Tax payer money goes to buy/make these fancy machines. And guess what the shame of all of this is; people don't pay taxes properly and try to save as much as they can on one part while on the other part, people donate so much more money to the government and refuse to raise a voice to find out how THEIR money was spent.
When are you going to expose the myth and the reality of the Su-30 MKI. Would really like to know your thoughts on this machine.
We are going to procure 230 MKIs by 2014, most of them to be made by HAL. HAL has indicated that it can manufacture only 12 MKIs per year!, hence the slow acquisition. We are steadily increasing the MKI squadrons (I think we have 4 now). We should have 10 squadrons by 2014 and an additional training / backup squadron
Not sure it will be an "expose" - but there are some thoughts that bother us.
By the way, is there a standard for the number of airplanes in a squadron? Also, how many of these birds do we have really? After reading tons of material, the best guess is between 50 - 70. Do you have a better source of information?
The other alarming part is that the govt is not even investing in resources to make the aircraft locally. manufacturing only 12 aircraft per year is pathetic for the HAL. Hence, we had to give orders for extra aircraft to Sukhoi, who currently have their assembly lines full with orders from Malaysia and others! aircraft. Ideally, we should have had atleast 400 of these aircraft by 2010 with 40 being inducted each year (i.e. 2 squadrons per year). Realistically, given political compulsions, et al, atleast one squadron of these aircraft should have been manufactured per year in India. Alas, for the short-sightedness of the Govt, the HAL assembly line can only make 12 per year! Govt. has planned to have one Sukhoi squadron in Assam around a year back, but nothing on that further! Absolute pathetic losers. And yes, we should make Mig-21 bison aircraft to win the quantity game too, with the Su-30 MKI, we have already won the quality game against Pak and more importantly, against China

The MKI is both a myth and a reality.

Barbar,
A Standard IAF squadron has 20 aircraft.
Thanks Mayuresh.
This report clears a lot of confusion about procurement, fleet strength etc.

The IAF is trying to get a fourth squadron by Feb, 2009.
In other words, we have between 60 - 80 of these aircraft.
The alarming part is how the IAF has to almost emotionally blackmail the Government to get equipment.
The other alarming part is that the govt is not even investing in resources to make the aircraft locally. manufacturing only 12 aircraft per year is pathetic for the HAL.
